Lighting the Way for the Next Generation of AFL Talent

LED sports lighting installation at Iona College enhances training capacity and supports AFLQ’s strategic development goals

Client Background & Challenge

Iona College, located in Brisbane’s bayside suburb of Lindum, is a Catholic boys’ school known for its strong sporting culture and dedication to student development both on and off the field. The college plays a significant role in local AFL talent development and maintains a close partnership with AFL Queensland, contributing players and facilities to the region’s sporting ecosystem.

Despite its well-established football program and access to expansive sports grounds at St Eugene’s Park, the college faced a common limitation: restricted field use during evenings and winter months due to insufficient lighting infrastructure. This not only impacted player training and match scheduling but also hindered the college’s ability to support broader AFL Queensland initiatives aimed at expanding community engagement and grassroots participation.

With growing demand for after-school programs, improved safety expectations, and a joint ambition to host high-quality training environments year-round, Iona College and AFL Queensland needed a future-proofed lighting solution that would meet both institutional and league standards.

Solution & Implementation

Jasstech was engaged to deliver a professional-grade LED sports lighting system tailored to the specific needs of Iona College and its partnership with AFL Queensland. Our team collaborated with both stakeholders to assess site conditions, define performance requirements, and design a system optimised for multi-use AFL training and competitive play.

Utilising Jasstech’s QuickConnect™ system and high-efficiency LED luminaires, the installation ensures consistent field-wide illumination with minimal glare, excellent uniformity, and full compliance with AS2560 lighting standards for football codes. The luminaires were mounted via engineered pole infrastructure, with specialised crane rigging and commissioning undertaken to meet timeline and safety expectations.

The upgraded system enables extended evening use, greater scheduling flexibility, and provides a safe, well-lit environment that enhances athlete performance and coaching outcomes. Additionally, the energy-efficient LED solution aligns with sustainability objectives, offering long-term reductions in power consumption and maintenance requirements.

Now operational, the lights at St Eugene’s Park mark a historic milestone in the Iona–AFL Queensland partnership, creating a modern, accessible training ground for current students and the wider AFL community.
